Granite Camping Area

Granite camping area, located within Cape Melville National Park in Australia, offers a tranquil and natural camping experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled along the picturesque Bathurst Bay, this camping area stretches for approximately 4 kilometers and is surrounded by lush, shady beach-front vegetation. It is uniquely positioned between the Oystercatcher camping area and the rocky tip of Cape Melville, enhancing the sense of seclusion and natural beauty.

1) Open fires: allowed (except when fire bans apply). Fuel stoves are recommended. Do not collect firewood in the park.

2) Generator use: generators that operate at a noise level less than 65dB(A) when measured at 7m from the generator are permitted.

Things to know

Access to Granite camping area is limited to high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles only, and it is not suitable for trailers, caravans, campervans, or buses. The journey to the camping area involves traversing sandy terrain, crossing a freshwater creek, and navigating several tidal creek crossings. Notably, the tidal creek crossing between Oystercatcher and Granite camping areas is particularly challenging and hazardous, and travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution and attempt the crossing only during very low tides. The camping area doesn't have separately defined campsites but rather offers an open area for tent camping beside your car. The campsite surface consists of sand, and there are no defined facilities available on-site. Campfires are allowed, except during fire ban periods, and it's advised to use fuel stoves for cooking. Collecting firewood within the park is prohibited. Given the remote location and lack of facilities, visitors are required to bring their own essentials. This includes an adequate supply of food and drinking water, rubbish bags for proper waste disposal, insect repellent, mosquito nets, a fuel stove with enough fuel, spare parts for their vehicle, and recovery equipment. While there is no mobile phone coverage in the area, the use of satellite phones is essential, and carrying personal locator beacons (PLBs) is highly recommended to ensure safety.
