The Lower Portals camping area can only be reached on foot via a 3.7-kilometer track starting from the Lower Portals car park. This trail typically takes around 1.5 hours to complete and involves moderate to steep gradients, providing hikers with a challenging yet rewarding journey. There are three separate camping sites available at Lower Portals, with a maximum capacity of 18 people in total. This limited occupancy ensures a peaceful and secluded camping experience. The ground at Lower Portals is primarily covered in soil and leaf litter, making it suitable for setting up tents. This remote campsite provides minimal facilities. Open fires are strictly prohibited at Lower Portals. Campers are only allowed to use fuel stoves for cooking and heating. Campers are advised to bring essential items, including drinking water, extra food, a well-equipped first-aid kit, a topographic map, compass, flashlight, warm clothing, wet weather gear, rubbish bags, insect repellent, and a fuel or gas stove for cooking. Additionally, it's recommended to carry a small trowel for burying faecal waste, adhering to responsible camping practices. Lower Portals has poor mobile phone coverage, so campers should not rely on their phones for communication or emergencies.
