Things to know
Munga-Thirri National Park, which encompasses the Simpson Desert, can only be reached by high-clearance 4WD vehicles. The rugged terrain and vast sand dunes make it necessary to have a capable vehicle for your journey The number of camping sites is undefined, but camping is only permitted within 100 meters of the QAA Line. The campsite surface is primarily composed of sand and dirt, reflecting the desert's natural environment. There are no facilities provided at the camping area. Campers are expected to be fully self-sufficient and bring all necessary supplies, including food, water, and camping equipment. Campfires are allowed, but it is essential to bring your own clean milled firewood and use an existing campfire site. Fuel stoves are recommended as a more environmentally friendly option. Campers must adhere to campfire and cooking guidelines to protect the fragile desert ecosystem. Generators are not allowed in this pristine environment to maintain the peaceful and natural ambiance of the desert. There is no mobile phone coverage in the Simpson Desert. To stay connected, it is advisable to carry UHF or HF radios and satellite phones for emergency communication.
