Things to know
Access to this camping zone is primarily by high clearance 4WD vehicles, and experienced walkers can access it on foot. Camper trailers are also welcome, but it's recommended to use the Bulwer–Blue Lagoon Road for towing as Middle Road is narrow and prone to bogging down heavy vehicles in soft sand. There is a maximum of 35 camp sites available, all clearly marked with totems. Seasonal closures may affect site availability, so it's advisable to plan accordingly. The camping sites vary in size, providing options for both secluded spots and more social camping areas. Many sites offer beautiful ocean views and are shaded by natural vegetation. The campsite surface is sand. There are no permanent facilities in this camping zone, so campers are encouraged to bring essential supplies. For extended stays, it's recommended to bring a portable toilet to ensure hygiene. Contents should not be disposed of in the toilets on the island. Open fires are permitted in designated fire sites, provided there are no fire bans or restrictions in place. However, it's recommended to use fuel or gas stoves instead of open fires. Campers should come prepared with essential supplies, including drinking water and containers, water sterilisation tablets, rubbish bags, sunscreen, insect repellent, firewood (preferably untreated mill off-cuts), an axe, sealable containers for rubbish, a first-aid kit, a shovel, a portable toilet, and sand pegs. Mobile phone coverage in this area is poor and unreliable, so campers should not rely on it for communication.
Neighborhood
The South-east camping zone is adjacent to exposed surf beaches, making it an ideal destination for surf enthusiasts. However, caution should be exercised while swimming or surfing due to periodic exposure of rocks at high tide. Fishing is a popular activity in this area, with opportunities to catch a variety of fish species. Additionally, campers can explore the surrounding natural beauty, take scenic drives, and visit cultural and historic sites in the vicinity.
