Things to know
Twelve Mile Lagoon camping area is located on the steep western bank of the Normanby River, near its junction with the Laura River, offering stunning views and a serene atmosphere. Access to this camping area is limited to 4WD vehicles, and it is not suitable for caravans, campervans, or buses. The road to the camping area can become impassable after heavy rain. There are eight numbered sites for general use and one numbered site for commercial operators only (site four). The camping area offers a variety of shady campsites nestled among trees, some overlooking deep and shallow sections of the lagoon. Campsite one provides beautiful views of a large sandbar at the confluence of the Normanby and Laura rivers. Campsite surfaces may vary seasonally, from dirt to grass. Campfires are allowed in designated fire rings, except when fire bans apply. It is recommended to use fuel stoves for cooking. Collecting firewood in the park is not permitted. Generators are allowed but must operate at less than 65dB(A) when measured 7m from the generator and only between 8.00 am and 7.00 pm. Campers should bring adequate food and drinking water, equipment for treating water, rubbish bags, insect repellent, mosquito nets, fuel stoves, and spare parts for their vehicles. Mobile phone coverage is not available in the area, so it's important to be prepared for limited communication.
Neighborhood
1) Boating: While boat access is limited, manual launching (no trailer access) is possible from sites five, six, and nine.
2) Fishing: The camping area is an excellent spot for fishing, offering the opportunity to relax and enjoy a day by the river.
3) Scenic Drive: The surrounding area is perfect for exploring, with scenic drives and opportunities to immerse yourself in nature.
4) Wildlife: Visitors should be aware that large crocodiles are frequently seen in the area, and caution is advised.
