Cooks Hut Camping Area in Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park (CYPAL) offers a serene camping experience in the Tropical North Queensland region of Australia. Cooks Hut holds historical significance as it was used as an army base for troops and heavy bombers during World War II. The hut was built by Reginald Cook, a gold prospector, who returned to the area after the war and lived in the hut until the early 1970s. 1) Open fires are allowed in existing fireplaces, except when fire bans apply. It is recommended to use fuel stoves.
2) Generators are prohibited to preserve the natural tranquility of the area.

Things to know

Cooks Hut Camping Area are six numbered campsites available, and they are in high demand during peak periods, so booking well in advance is essential. The camp sites are suitable for tent camping beside your car and camper trailers (maximum of one trailer per site). All sites are shaded and sheltered, providing a pleasant camping environment.
Facilities include a hybrid toilet. Open fires are allowed in existing fireplaces. There is no mobile phone coverage in the camping area. Visitors need to bring adequate food and drinking water, equipment for treating water, rubbish bags, insect repellent, screened tents or mosquito nets, a fuel stove and enough fuel and spare parts for their vehicle.
