Hann Crossing Camping Area

Hann Crossing camping area is a picturesque camping spot located on the North Kennedy River within the Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, situated on the southern Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. It's important to note that despite its name, the camping area is located on the North Kennedy River, not the nearby Hann River which joins the North Kennedy River downstream.

Things to know

Hann Crossing camping area is approximately 340 kilometers northwest of Cairns and around 140 kilometers west of Cooktown. It is nestled within the central part of the Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park. Access to the camping area requires a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle due to the rugged and sometimes challenging terrain. he camping area offers a variety of campsite options. There are 17 numbered sites for general use and two additional sites (sites seven and eight) designated for commercial operators. Please note that site 18 is permanently closed. Campsites cater to various camping styles, including tent camping beside your car and camper trailer setups. Some campsites offer shade, ranging from full shade to partial shade, while a few sites may have no shade. Site 16, for instance, provides full shade, although it might not be suitable for solar panels. Generator use is permitted, but noise levels must be kept below 65dB(A) when measured 7 meters from the generator. Generator use is restricted to the hours between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM. As there is no mobile phone coverage in the area, it's important to bring essential items such as sufficient food and drinking water, equipment for treating water, rubbish bags, insect repellent, mosquito nets, and a fuel stove. Adequate fuel and spare parts for your 4WD vehicle are also essential.

The camping area is situated along the banks of the North Kennedy River, providing opportunities for both boat and bank fishing. Visitors can enjoy fishing from the riverbanks or take their boats downstream to explore where the North Kennedy River and Hann River converge. Apart from fishing and camping, visitors can explore the nearby attractions such as Breeza Homestead and the White Lily and Red Lily lagoons. These attractions offer an opportunity to experience the local flora and fauna and appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Visitors should be cautious of the local wildlife, especially large crocodiles that are frequently seen in the area. It's essential to exercise caution, adhere to safety guidelines, and be "croc wise" when exploring the surroundings.
